Overview

Other than the much sought-after Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park, visitors to Rwanda also have a chance to go on a classic African safari in Akagera National Park and sight numerous game as well as experience an array of wildlife.

Rwanda is mostly associated with the Mountainous landscape that sprawls from the central to the western and northern parts of the country. However the eastern region breaks this monotony with grassland plains, swamps and lakes, containing Akagera National Park. Game drives through park offer sightings of game such Elephants, Giraffes, Buffaloes, Zebra and a variety of antelope species. There are cats such as Leopards, Jackals, and Spotted Hyenas but these are very elusive.

Other activities include an afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema to sight some aquatic wildlife, and game that come to drink along the shores. Hippos and Crocodiles are a common sight in the lake. Birdlife in the park is very impressive with more than 525 species recorded in the park.

Recreational fishing is available on the shores of Lake Shakani. Main fish caught is catfish and tilapia and you have the option to retain your catch or release back into the water.

Game Drive

The Akager park is best explored in a 4X4 car (safari jeep), driving the dirt track from the south of the park to the north. This track goes through nearly all the habitats of the park thus giving you an opportunity to see a variety of animals and birds along the way.

The main animal watching place is the Kilala plains the north of the park where a lot of wildlife can be seen roaming the flat plains.

The boat ride on Lake Ihema

A 1 – 2 hours boat ride on the biggest lake in the park, Lake Ihema, is a highlight of the trip as you get to explore the far away shores and islands that are often filled with wildlife such as crocodiles, hippos, and plenty of water birds.

 Balloon safaris

Balloon safaris start at sunrise and provide a wonderful opportunity to catch the sunrise over the amazing landscape of the park from the best view point above the ground. The balloon safari will take you to the distant parts of the park which are unreachable by car thus increasing your chances of seeing more wildlife in the park.

Best time for a safari in Rwanda

Animal population in Akagera has been growing over the years and unlike before when it was difficult to find animals during the hot seasons, animals can now be found throughout the year.
