About Mt. Karisimbi volcano

Mount Karisimbi, 4506m, is found in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda, and lies on the border with the Democratic Republic Congo. It is the highest of the volcanoes that form the magnificent Virunga Mountain range, and it is the fifth highest mountain in Africa. The name “Karisimbi” in Kinyarwanda means “white shell”, referring to the snow on the summit of the volcano which is seen during the months of June, July and August.

Hiking Mount Karisimbi Volcano

Mt Karisimbi involves a 2 day hike which sets off at 7am, with the meeting of the ranger guides at the park headquarters at Kinigi, thereafter driving for approximately forty five minutes to the starting point of the trek in the park and up the mountain. After 6 hours trek you will set up camp at 3700 for the overnight. The following day you hike up to the summit before embarking on the return trek back to the starting point and end of the Mt. Karisimbi Hike.

The 3 day Rwanda tour Itinerary for the Mt. Karisimbi climbing adventure

Day 1 –

Leave the hotel in Kigali and head to the northern district of Musanze. It is a 2 – 3 hour drive on a smooth tarmac road which meanders around the rolling hills. Check into your hotel and enjoy the sundowner over the magnificent Virunga mountains.

Day 2 –

Have early breakfast, and report to the park offices by 7am. Carry snacks for the hike, and enough drinking water. Meet the ranger guides for briefing and then drive towards Mountains Karisimbi and Bisoke. At the starting point just outside you shall find the porters to hire for the hike and you will also find a pile of walking sticks to pick from. Begin the trek into Volcanoes National Park.

Day 3 –

Upon return from the Mt. Karisimbi you meet the tour driver at the starting point and you will be driven back to Kigali.
